Spotlight on Citta Design – Bedroom Style

11 04 2012

I hope you all had a fabulous Easter, and the Easter Bunny found you! The Easter bunny sure found us, though I am kind of wishing he hadn’t, with the mountains of chocolate around the house that I am now trying to avoid! I was hoping to lose a few kilos before the wedding this year, not gain them!

Anyway, today I did a little virtual shopping… Got a little distracted, but I love Citta Design’s products so much I have pulled together a bunch of my favourite products from their new winter range, that I would just love to style a room with. Now I could have done a living room, or even a kitchen wishlist with all their beautiful furniture and decorator items, but with the sudden cold snap here, my mind racing forward to winter… So of course I have pulled together a look for a lovely cozy bedroom, and I couldn’t help myself but add a few bathroom accessories too! The look is bright and fresh, to lift our spirits during the cooler months, with lots of lovely textures such as felt and the knitted cushion. I actually think it would be perfect for a boys bedroom, except for the wash bag and jewellery box that is, or I would love to bring all this home for our guest bedroom.

So what do you think? I just love it all and wish I could bring it all home! One of the best things about Citta Designs range is the way all the colours are coordinated so well and flow seamlessly from the living room, to the kitchen/ dining and then continues through to the bedroom, bathroom and travel accessories, making it very easy to mix and match! If you haven’t heard of Citta Design before, they are definitely worth having a look! Click here to go to their fabulous website, and the good news is that even though they are a New Zealand company, they are already taking on the global market, with stockists in Australia, Hong Kong and throughout Europe. Hooray!

For now looks like I will just have to keep dreaming about this virtual room of mine… What would you buy?

Key Look #1 – French Industrial

1 03 2012

While wandering around the trade shows this week, I spotted 3 key looks that still seem to be prominent here in Australia right now. You will most likely have already seen these looks here and there on blogs and in magazines, possibly you already have some of the key pieces in your own home, or maybe you have been thinking about re-styling a room in your home based around one of these looks. Either way, after seeing so many products that fit into these key looks I think I’m safe to say that they are here to stay a little longer. I am going to spread these 3 looks over the next 3 days, and break down each look for you with examples, key pieces and ways you can create each look in your home.

Today I am going to start with the French Industrial Look.

While the French Industrial look has been around for a while now, it seems here in Australia we just can’t get enough! I saw countless stands displaying furniture and decorator items that are perfect for bringing this look into your home, and I have to say it is growing on me… The look combines the soft and feminine French Provincial look with rough and heavy industrial pieces. It really is the best of both worlds, with the soft luxurious comfort of natural fibres and stripped back timber, contrasted against the heavy angular lines of industrial furniture. Being a look that has been inspired by 2 different styles means that you can quite easily pick your favourite elements from each and combine it to create your own unique style. Still not quite sure? A perfect example would be a traditional French Louis side chair + Industrial hessian bags = French Industrial. Keeping the refined shape of the french Louis Chair, but with a raw/ worn timber finish and industrial style hessian.

And some interiors with a French Industrial style….

Some of the key pieces that will help make this look work include

- a slip wash cover for your sofa in a light neutral colour

- hessian or french script style throw cushions

- a jute or sisal rug

- heavy industrial style furniture such as a trolley style coffee table, or chunky timber dining table

- large industrial style pendant or even tripod lights

- fine carved detailing on doors, fireplaces or furniture

- steel furniture such as the Tolix stool or cafe style chairs

The trick to making this look work is to keep to a very neutral palette, with minimal colour. Think grayed blues, whitewashed timber, off whites and light greys, balanced with small doses of black and iron for some depth and contrast. Use natural materials such as linen, hemp, cotton and jute, and layer the room with different textures. Creating a harmonious interior is all about editing and finding the right balance. A great trick when selecting items to go in the space is to ask yourself… does this look french? does it look industrial? and if it is neither, put it down!

So do you like this look? It is a very peaceful and serene style, and I like the way the french influence can soften the sometimes cold industrial look, but it is not my favourite of the 3 looks… Drop by tomorrow to see the next key look I spotted this week, I’m sure you will love it!

Crafty Bedroom Makeover

17 10 2011

During my time-off over the holidays, I came across a lovely blog by a young couple who bought a house in 2009, and their progress as they gradually update their home from dark and dull, to vibrant and fresh. I love their attention to detail and the way they have used the colours from the main bedroom, and carried them through to the bathroom and ensuite. Even better is the number of DIY projects they have done, I’ll point them out as we go….

First of all, meet Dan and Haley, of The Hills blog… and this is the main bedroom before they worked their magic…

Now here is and after…

I think they have managed to balance the colours and patterns perfectly… A soft grey base with crisp white to highlight, pops of yellow for some colour and a dash of black for contrast. Don’t you just love the feature wall behind the bed! Now would you believe me when I say the feature wall is DIY project #1?

That’s right! Dan and Haley painted the wall grey and then they stenciled the wall using a home-made stencil and pearlescent paint. They have even taken the time to centre the pattern on the wall… I would love to know how long this took! But most definitely worth it for the stunning effect!

DIY project #2 – is the white textured upholstered bedhead. Again they have kept it simple with a white textured fabric, but their attention to detail is spot on, I love the neat corners and pillow centre.

DIY#3 – the addition of yellow ribbon to both the lamps and the bedskirt, makes it look like bespoke/designer linen!

DIY#4 – the curtains. Simple, yet dramatic

DIY#5 – Dan and Haley repainted and upholstered the chair in the corner

DIY#6 – they even made their own framed chalk board! So sweet!

Still to go on their list, they are planning to find a new dresser and possibly painting it yellow to complete the room. I actually don’t mind the timber for a bit of contrast, or maybe a black dresser would be nice?

DIY#7 – Haley also spray painted this little trinket tray using painters tape for the design. A very quick, easy and inexpensive DIY project that comes up a treat!

And finally, this is a wall in their bathroom where they have made their own little shelves, painted a yellow stripe which wraps around the entire room, and placed lots of little goodies for a lovely homely touch. I love that Haley has framed a piece of the chair fabric in the top frame – I seem to have a real soft spot for fabrics and wallpapers in frames…

So what do you think? If you would like to see more of this home, check out The Hills, I’m certainly looking forward to seeing more of this home, who doesn’t love a good before and after? Have you completed any DIY projects, I would love you to share!

Have a wonderful Day,

Rochelle xx
